ABSTRACT

Drought negatively affects the productivity of plants globally. Anthropogenic climate change is expected to create great uncertainty about the timing and frequency of drought events in the future across the globe (IPCC, 2014). However, there is no consensual definition of drought. Here we refer to drought as insufficient soil moisture that results in inhibition of normal plant growth and function. In other words, drought stress to plants occurs when the supply of water does not meet the water requirements.
