ABSTRACT

In recent years, consumer demands for better quality of foods have increased, and it has been necessary to reduce the costs of food and bio production processes. The use of an optimization technique offers one solution for overcoming these problems. It is, however, not easy to solve such problems using conventional mathematical approaches because the food and bio production systems are complex and uncertain. There exist systematically complicated properties such as nonlinearity, time variation, and multivariability in their systems. Intelligent approaches are useful for treating and optimizing such complex systems to which conventional mathematical approaches are not easily applied. One approach is the use of genetic algorithms. Recently, genetic algorithms have been applied for optimizations of a wide variety of complex systems such as food, bio, and agricultural production processes.
