Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the application of a fiber-based OCT device for clinical diagnosis of pathologies. The device design and its customizing by developing optical probes for particular endoscopic applications are discussed. The device and various probes are presented schematically. Examples of using the developed customized OCT modalities in clinical in vivo studies are given. The device is shown to be effective for diagnosis of cervical, bladder, and gastrointestinal cancer. In combination with fluorescent cystoscopy OCT is an almost perfect technique for endoscopic diagnosis of early bladder cancer. Because of its high sensitivity to cancer, OCT can also be used for presurgery planning and surgery guidance of the tumor borders.
