ABSTRACT
The absorption of a chromophoric amino acid in this spectral region is due to the combined absorptions of the side chain chromophore and of the carboxylate group. Because the carboxylate group is consumed in polymerizing amino acids to polypeptides, an amino acid residue absorbs less intensely than a free amino acid.
