ABSTRACT
The reader is directed to recommendations from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) (1,2). The IUPAC recommendations are contained in the excellent work on carbohydrate structure by Collins (3). There are also excellent discussions of nomenclature in several reference texts (4,5). The reader is also directed to several recent articles concerning specific nomenclature issues (6-17). There are also IUPAC guidelines for glycolipids (18) as well as a separate article on the nomenclature of inositol derivatives (19).
