Abstract

Depressive disorders annually affect approximately 10% of the population in the United States with a lifetime prevalence of 10% in men and 15% in women. Along with the high prevalence, costs associated with depressive disorders have also grown, as the annual economic burden of depressive disorders is estimated at $83 billion [1]. Furthermore, even in individuals who do not meet diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD), depressive symptoms have negative influences on health. Elevated depressive symptoms are associated with an increased risk of MDD [2], functional impairment [35], higher rates of disability [6], and increased social dysfunction [3,7].
