Abstract

In 2010 approximately 14% of the U.S. population was over 65 years of age. This percentage is expected to increase to approximately 21% by the year 2030. Accompanying this shift in the demographic makeup of U.S. population is a greater need for specific nutrition guidance to achieve and maintain optimal physical and cognitive function with advancing years. Evidence suggests that within a population, older adults who score in the higher categories for diet quality [14] and physical activity measures [5,6] have the best survival rates.
