The application of psychological theories and models to health behavior change research, program development, and policy has soared in popularity over the past few decades. Desired outcomes are most likely achieved within the context of health behavior change programs that are based on an objective understanding of the target health behaviors and the variables that influence them; theories and models enable researchers and other program developers to organize these variables to achieve these outcomes [1]. Theories and models provide structures for identifying and examining problems, choosing or developing appropriate interventions, and assessing results. They fall within the parameters of the current emphasis on employing evidence-based interventions in the public health, behavioral medicine, and medicine fields [1].
