During the past several decades, physicians and scientists have shown increased interest in the connection between nutrition and brain health. Although the impact of our diet on normal brain development has been appreciated and driven public health recommendations for pregnancy and pediatric care, only recently has attention been focused on brain health and nutrition throughout the life span. Today, research is pointing to the need for a balanced and nutritious diet for maintaining cognitive health as we age. Nutrition also has an impact on other aspects of brain health, helping to maintain normal mood, mental focus, motivation, and attention. This chapter will highlight some of the scientific evidence indicating a relationship between nutrition and brain health and summarize some nutritional recommendations for maintaining cognitive health and mood stability as people age.
