Abstract

Ecological models are developed with the aim of overviewing and understanding complex ecological systems and of describing responses to changing impacts on the ecosystems. They consist of five elements:

State variables that describe the most important components of the ecosystem.

Forcing functions that describe the impacts on the ecosystem. They encompass all exchanges between the ecosystem and the environment.

Equations of the ecological processes that describe how state variables are changed, including transfers of matter, energy, and information between two or more state variables.

Parameters that describe the properties of state variables.

Physical and chemical constants.
