Abstract

In this chapter, we introduce software assurance, discussing the impact of software on our lives, the risks associated with software vulnerabilities, and some basic definitions of software assurance. We then introduce modern principles of software assurance, along with historical principles of software assurance. With this background in hand, we were able to identify a number of process models, frame-works, and best practices that were relevant to software assurance. Finally, we identify a research framework that could be used to support current research and to identify gap areas for future research.
