Abstract

In essence, machine learning—more completely referred to as statistical machine learning—is concerned with identifying and exploiting patterns in data. This has lead to another name for the same area: “pattern recognition.” Machine learning is an inherently interdisciplinary field, combining computer science with mathematics and statistics, and it has many application areas such as robotics, bioinformatics, cognitive science, speech recognition, machine vision, and medicine.
