Spoken language understanding (SLU) is an emerging research area between artificial intelligence, speech, and language processing. The term “SLU” has largely been coined for understanding human speech directed at computers, although understanding human/human conversations is also a vibrant area of SLU. Having a semantic representation for SLU that is both broad in coverage and simple enough to be applicable to several different tasks and domains is challenging, hence most SLU tasks and approaches depend on the application and environment (such as mobile vs. TV) they have been designed for.
