The original motivation to introduce a layer between the user application and the underlying hardware was based on the assumption that certain tasks are common across certain applications and the application developer needs an abstraction layer from the underlying hardware. Early operating systems had not been much more than a hardware abstraction layer offering basic interfaces to interact with external input and output devices and essential intrinsics of the processing units for computing, graphics, sound, or other special purpose processors.
