Abstract

A handbook is “a book of information, guidance, or information, as for an occupation, travel, or reference,” * a definition that fits this volume and section very well. A “discipline” is “a branch of instruction or learning; behavior in accord with rules of conduct.” More established subjects such as physics and chemistry or disciplines such as the practice of architecture have handbooks that are a compendium of facts, organized for ready reference (such as the specific heat of materials or the standard width of an aisle in an office building) or procedures (such as safety practices).
