Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of how the ideas and practices associated with empirical software engineering have evolved and also aims to supply some pointers toward the ideas that constitute current “best practice.” In doing so, we hope to aid the “would-be” empiricist to identify the most suitable form of study for a particular need and to provide enough background for software engineers in general to appreciate the strengths and limitations of empirical knowledge and practice.
