The use of wireless technology for industrial applications is really attractive, as confirmed by the constantly increasing adoption of the wireless fieldbus term. Avoiding the use of cables allows to minimize not only costs but also cabling errors, which are the most common reason of communication systems failure in plants (not just in the commissioning stage). As a matter of fact, the adoption of wireless technology in the industrial world is not new, but usually was limited to niche applications due to lack of standard and well-accepted solutions. In particular, peculiar requirements of industrial communications related to determinism, low cost, availability, reliability, and security oblige the development of specific wireless standards, due to the inadequacy of consumer-oriented solutions.
