During the fieldbus war (1986–2002), several technologies appeared as de facto standard for industrial networks (Modbus, Fieldbus Foundation, HART, just to name a few) (Sauter, 2010). All these technologies were based on structured cabling and they had as a goal creating a universal protocol to meet all the industrial demands (Decotignie, 2009). Despite the appearance of wireless technologies, the scenario has not been very different. A variety of technologies coexist and others are yet to be seen.
