Abstract

Controller area network (CAN) [Int93a] provides an inexpensive and robust network technology, which is widely deployed in many application domains such as automotive, avionic, and industrial control systems. For example, present-day cars contain multiple CAN buses deployed for different domains such as comfort or powertrain subsystems [ES09,HB08]. Properties of CAN that have led to its success include its simplicity, high flexibility, efficiency, and low cost. Adversely, CAN exhibits limitations with respect to reliability, diagnosis, and scalability.
