Abstract

MIL-STD-1553 is a standard that defines the electrical and protocol characteristics for a data bus. AS-15531 is the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) commercial equivalent to the military standard. A data bus is similar to what the personal computer and office automation industry have dubbed a local area network(LAN). In avionics, a data bus is used to provide a medium for the exchange of data and information among various systems and subsystems. MIL-STD-1553 has been deployed on fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, unmanned aircraft, surface and subsurface ships, ground vehicles, spacecraft and satellites, and the International Space Station. It is undoubtedly the most successful military standard developed.
