Abstract

Controller area network (CAN) is one of the leading fieldbuses for networked control systems. Since the history of CAN goes back to 1986, some billion CAN nodes have been sold worldwide. At the beginning of the 1980s, most communication technologies, which were available at that time, were not adequate for in-car communications and unable to fulfill the requirements of a number of automotive applications. For these reasons, Bosch GmbH started a project to develop a new serial bus system suitable for use in passenger cars. The development of CAN also involved academic partners and was partially supported by Intel, which was interested as a potential semiconductor producer.
