The LonTalk® Communication Protocol defines rules for the communication in LonWorks networks. All nodes connected to a local operating network need to support the LonTalk protocol to such an extent that all communication services are supported. Otherwise, the performance and the openness of the system may not be guaranteed. The LonMark Interoperability Association, founded by significant producers of LonWorks-based devices in 1993, issues guidelines for the development and integration of interoperable LonWorks networks. The LonMark Interoperability Guidelines describe a unique platform for interoperable (manufacturer-independent) LonWorks networks. One task of the LonMark Interoperability Association is conformance testing and certification of LonWorks-based products according to their interoperability guidelines. The protocol has also been advanced to the ISO standard level in ISO/IEC 14908 [1] (Figure 56.1).
