Abstract

The main goal of a railway network operator is to provide a timely and safe train service to the customer. Automation and computer-driven train control are essential elements toward achieving such a service for large railway systems. Historically, interlocking systems were locally manned. Dispatchers controlled local train and shunting movements and exchanged the relevant information, following strict protocols, via landline.
