Abstract

It is important to understand fully the materials used for the construction of LVR. The full array includes natural soils, aggregates, Portland cement, bituminous materials, and polymeric materials. While the polymeric materials (geosynthetics) will be covered in Chapter 12, the rest of the materials will be examined here. After discussing the basic phase diagram for soil and using it to define various gravimetric and volumetric terms, the materials and some of their tests will be covered in turn.
