Abstract

This chapter contains one of the most fundamental ideas of the book: embedding information about structure and content within the text, using the same characters as the text itself. In many of the word-processing packages in use today, information about format and style is relegated to special character symbols, making the file look to all intents and purposes like a binary file. The idea of text markup has a long history and has become of major importance with the advent of the World Wide Web.
