Abstract

Since the first edition of this book, organisations and individuals have been using XML to solve a wide range of information management tasks. These tasks include schemas to aid interoperability across systems as well as simply improving the exchange of data in common human readable form. There is now a signficant number of XML implementations that can be applied to a wide range of GIS-related disciplines and we now have XML schemas specific to Web delivery to support different forms of geography and geometry. XML schemas now exist that define water, buildings, city data and civil engineering. This chapter provides an overview of four common XML schemas used in Online GIS.
