Abstract

Graphene has been a promising material for wide applications in areas including electronic devices, energy storage, biological materials, and composites, etc. due to its excellent properties. However, the prerequisite is to have high-quality graphene up to industrial level production, and it is a critical challenge to provide large production with high-quality graphene sheets. This chapter introduces a simple and effective process for producing large-scale and high-quality graphene sheets by hot pressing. The reduced graphene oxide sheets obtained from graphene oxide by low temperature thermal exfoliation were annealed at 1500°C and 40 MPa uniaxial pressures for 5 min in vacuum. No appreciable oxygen content was observed from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and no D peak was detected in the Raman spectrum. The graphene sheets had a much higher electron mobility (1000 cm2/V · S) than other chemically modified graphenes. The applications in graphene-based composites, such as photocatalysis, energy storage, and composites reinforcement, revealed that the high-quality graphene exhibited improved properties when compared with regular graphene.
