Abstract

This chapter provides readers some tips, tools, and advice for working with complex datasets and how to extract useful information on human behavior as drivers interact with advanced vehicle systems. It is separated into four sections on understanding the data collection tools, the data itself, the controller, and analysis methods. The data collection section focuses on on-road and simulator data. The data section describes ways to manipulate, visualize, and explore the data. The controller section considers the different agents in automated, connected, and intelligent vehicles, or specifically, who is in control (e.g., driver or system) and the research questions of interest. The analytical methods section provides a general overview of methods that can be used to capture, infer, and predict behavior.
