ABSTRACT

Bullying has always existed but has not been addressed as an occupational safety and health (OSH) issue until recently. It has become more of a concern with the rise of workplace violence as an OSH issue. Workplace bullying is not always thought of as an aspect of safety and health. It is commonly viewed as more of a social problem that is interpersonal in nature, one that individuals should work out between themselves. However, it is not that simple. The reasons for addressing bullying are that the workers have a right to expect to not be faced with a hostile work environment or experience adversarial relationships within their place of employment. Bullying has been linked to mental and physical illness in the workforce. The impact of this type of dissension does not impact favorably on productivity.
