ABSTRACT

Railway-related standards such as EN 50126, EN 50129, IEC 62267-2, and IEC 62278-3 introduce terms used in reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (also called RAMS) and require railway suppliers, operators, maintainers, and duty holders to implement comprehensive RAMS management systems. This chapter explains the general requirements toward railway RAMS management throughout the life cycle of a technology or system for railway application. In general, the responsibilities for the tasks in the various life cycle phases depend on the contractual and, sometime, legal relationship between the stakeholders involved. It is important that the related responsibilities are defined and agreed. The topics of RAMS management and its process described are covered in this chapter in a way that a reliable, safe, cost-optimal, and improved quality of railway systems may be achieved.
