ABSTRACT

The safety integrity concept and the philosophy behind it are explained. Allocation and apportionment of safety integrity requirements due to CLC EN 50126 are outlined. With regard to safety-related electronic equipment, safety integrity levels, their application, allocation, and apportionment are described. This includes pitfalls as well as potential misuse of the integrity concept. The specific issues with regard to mechatronic systems in comparison to electronic systems are considered.
