ABSTRACT

The regional history and presence of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) in western North America collectively reflects the entire range of diversity observed in their occurrence throughout the rest of the continent. For example, like southeastern North America (see Chapter 16), wild pigs have been present in California since European colonial times. In contrast, similar to the presence of these animals in 276many northern tier US states and Canadian provinces/territories (see Chapters 13, 14), the occurrence of wild pigs in a number of locations in the region has been recent, sporadic, and short-lived.
