ABSTRACT

Polymeric materials have been employed everywhere in our daily life, however, flammability excludes them from further application. A myriad of layered nanomaterials have newly emerged as multi-functional flame retardants for polymers due to their unique nanostructures and high performance in the nanocomposites. Numerous reports have confirmed excellent flame retardancy of functionalized layered nanomaterials in various polymer matrices. In this chapter, several representative layered nano-flame retardants including graphene, MoS2, and layered double hydroxides will be exhibited systematically, starting from the preparation of functionalized layered nanomaterials until ending by the application in flame retardant polymer nanocomposites. We wish to present the charming character of layered nanomaterials in flame retardant polymer nanocomposites through this chapter thereby inspiring more interesting work in the field of flame retardant nanomaterials to come out. The functionalized layered nanomaterials have the great potential to pave the new path in improving the flame retardance of polymer nanocomposites in the future.
