ABSTRACT
The accounts on which our knowledge of the first three centuries of Shı¯ ı¯ history is based are often obscure and conflicting. In the view of many modern secular historians Twelver Shi ism comes clearly to light only at the end of this period. The following account derives largely but not exclusively from traditional Shı¯ ı¯ sources.
