ABSTRACT

The rst section of this handbook focuses on an important topic in the development of selfregulation-the development of emotion regulation throughout infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Emotion regulation has become a signi cant focus of research from the developmental psychopathology perspective because many types of behavioral disorder fundamentally seem to involve dif culties with emotion regulation. Moreover, emotion regulation has long been a central issue from a functionalist perspective. Both of these perspectives have notably informed the chapters in this section. However, although there are considerable areas of agreement across chapters, there are also interesting and noteworthy distinctions in perspective.
