ABSTRACT

International freshwater law has a signifi cant role to play in addressing global water-related issues, including transboundary disputes. This chapter examines the corpus of international freshwater law and how it has evolved to respond to transboundary challenges. The chapter focuses on the relevance and prospects for the Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses (UN Watercourses Convention) – the most authoritative statement of international law in this fi eld. The scope, norms, procedures and institutional arrangements are explored as well as the implementation challenges that lie ahead.
