ABSTRACT

The linkage between energy and the environment is well established, as any form of power generation will have some effect. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions remains a dominant factor in future choices about electricity generation. Nuclear energy is one option as it emits only negligible amounts of carbon dioxide. The growing global demand for energy, desire to combat climate change and gradual decline in dependence on fossil fuels have warranted a renewed emphasis on nuclear power. But public concern is increasing due to the potentially catastrophic nature of the risks involved. Thus, safe use of nuclear energy remains a challenge for the international community and the current regime should draw lessons from the recent Fukushima incident.
