ABSTRACT

Good environmental governance requires the protection and preservation of both the natural and cultural environments. This has been recognised by the international community with a number of heritage conventions being adopted over the last forty years. This chapter introduces and explains the seven key global heritage treaties governing tangible heritage sites, moveable cultural property, intangible heritage and underwater cultural heritage. The key provisions are explored as well as remaining challenges including barriers to implementation, armed confl ict and the threat of climate change.
