ABSTRACT

Related service personnel are essential to supporting the success of students with disabilities in general education settings through both direct intervention as well as contributions to collaborative multi-disciplinary problem-solving teams. This chapter will identify related service personnel, discuss the services they provide, their prevalence in public schools, and the pre-professional training they acquire that prepares them for working in inclusive settings. Furthermore, this chapter will discuss two primary roles of related service personnel in contributing to successful inclusion: participation in integrated multi-disciplinary team services, and fostering home-school collaborations. Implications for practice in inclusive schools will be discussed, as well as future directions for research.
