ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with an overview of responsible investment (RI) in the South African context. South Africa is a developing country, located on the most southern tip of Africa. The country covers over 1 million square kilometres and is divided into nine provinces. There are 11 official languages, including Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. The government is a multi-party constitutional democracy that operates at three distinct levels (national, provincial and local). South Africa has three capitals, namely Cape Town (legislative capital), Pretoria (administrative capital) and Bloemfontein (judicial capital) (South African Government Information 2011).
