ABSTRACT

South Africa projects many contrasting images. On the one hand, the country represents one of Africa’s rare economic success stories. The country has one of the largest, most diversified and developed economies of sub-Saharan Africa. The economy’s growth and development has been steady, if not spectacular, and its progress has been favourable enough to enable the country to join the elite emerging economy group, the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, People’s Republic of China, South Africa), as Africa’s only member. Considerable progress has also been made in the establishment of democratic institutions anchored in one of the world’s most progressive constitutions.
