ABSTRACT
Most analysis of the recent wave of large-scale land acquisitions in Africa has focused on the role of international players and central government. Simultaneously a subtle but potentially more invasive rush for rural land by city-based domestic businessmen is taking place. These acquisitions are expanding fast and risk blocking the growth of smallholder farming systems and the local economy.
