ABSTRACT

Two of the key benefits, which can be gained by hosting a sporting event, are international exposure and the consequent possibility of creating a lasting tourism legacy. Those hosting major sports events often take for granted that their event automatically generates substantial positive legacies, such as an increase in tourism numbers. Yet there is a need to distinguish here between short-term effects (the so-called economic impact by event visitors) and long-term effects (the so-called tourism legacy), which will be investigated in this chapter (Preuss et al., 2009).
