ABSTRACT

In Leisure Studies there has been a long tradition in which people have sought to address the relationship between leisure and work (the ‘work-leisure couplet’). However, the emergence of flexible (post-Fordist, post-industrial, neoliberal) work arrangements has led some to question the relevance of employing paid work to help understand leisure. In these altered conditions home-based work can be seen as a highly exible form of employment, from an employer’s viewpoint, whilst for an individual such new working arrangements may be said to oer a better work-life balance, with an emphasis placed on their leisure lives. This had led some to suggest that leisure is better served by exploring notions of lifestyle choice, identity and consumption.
