ABSTRACT

This chapter specifically aims to: (1) define the meaning of working conditions, (2) explore the global perspectives of working conditions across selected employed populations such as child labor and migrant workers in terms of statistical occurrence and working conditions, and (3) delineate roles of human resource development (HRD) in dealing with the relevant issues of working conditions of the two segments of population. Particularly relevant resources for this chapter are documents from the United Nations’ (2009) survey reports on flexible working arrangements, United Nations’ Human Development Report (2010, 2011), several sources from International Labour Organizations (ILO 2012, 2013, Dávalos 2002) and specific countries’ studies on the working conditions and employment of selected populations. The next section presents the meaning of work conditions, and statistics from selected countries on migrants and child labor employment, working conditions and problems of the two population segments (namely child labor and migrant workers). Thus, the discussion within this chapter shall highlight how migrants and child labor employment significantly contribute to the HRD and nation building of the selected countries.
