Kannada (kanna?a) belongs to the southern branch of the Dravidian languages. First attested in an inscription found near Halmidi village in Hassan District dating to c. 450 CE, Kannada has a continuous literary tradition from the ninth century CE to the present. It is one of the four literary Dravidian languages; only Tamil has a longer literary tradition.
