ABSTRACT
The association between sport and religion is by most accounts an ancient one. The intermingling of sport and its precursors with religion can be found in numerous ancient cultures all around the globe. From the ancient Olympics, to the Meso-American ball games, to the fertility and initiation rituals of North American Indians (Guttmann, 2004), a plenitude of sport’s religious associations are identifiable in the ancient world.
