ABSTRACT
Hate crimes have been vilified in our everyday vernacular. The seemingly increasing occurrence of hate crimes, and related hate crime prosecutions, in Canada has been accompanied by numerous reports, governmental studies, think tanks and working groups relating to the topic. Despite the increase in hate crime research though, few quantitative studies exist. This chapter discusses the hate crime problem in Canada, and examines the challenges faced by law enforcement and the legal communities when dealing with hate crimes.
