ABSTRACT

The family campaign and subsequent public inquiry (Macpherson, 1999) into the murder of Stephen Lawrence raised awareness and concern about the prevalence and nature of racist attacks in the UK, as well as the impact of these offences on victims and wider communities. The publication of the inquiry report heralded revolutionary changes in the prosecution of race hate crime as the police service and other criminal and community justice agencies began to address the phenomenon of racist crime.
