ABSTRACT

Introduction In this chapter we explore how theological thinking informs the relationship between two faith communities and global development. Following a discussion of Christian and Jewish understandings of what ‘theology’ is, we then aim to outline distinctive methodological features of theological approaches when compared to social science approaches. This will be followed by an examination of some of the ways in which Christian and Jewish theologians have thought about and responded to poverty, and we will then explore some of the challenges and questions raised for these faith traditions by post-war theories and practices of development. In conclusion we make several constructive proposals about directions future theological thinking might take.
